When it comes to the realities of child abuse and neglect, knowledge is power.
Our community engagement and outreach efforts aim to educate people about the existence of child abuse, the trauma it can cause, and how it can be prevented. By increasing awareness and spreading knowledge about child abuse, NRV CARES is building support for children and families throughout the New River Valley.

The Stewards of Children Training workshop, provided by NRV CARES trained staff, increases awareness of child sexual abuse, provides knowledge, and encourages prevention.
Build off the foundation of The 5 Steps to Protecting Children™ , the workshop uses real people and real stories to illustrate the realities of child sexual abuse. Any adult who is concerned about the welfare of children and wants to learn how to protect them is invited to attend.
New River Valley Spring Family Fun Festivals take place each year across our localities, offering free, resource-rich events for children and families. These festivals are filled with fun activities, games, prizes, and special treats—creating joyful moments while connecting families with valuable community resources.
Held in April and May, these events celebrate Child Abuse Prevention Month and the belief that all children deserve safe, healthy, and happy childhoods.
Come out, have fun, and show your support for strong families and thriving kids in the New River Valley!
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action in support of safe, nurturing environments for all children. The national symbol for this important month is the Pinwheel—a representation of childhood, joy, and the bright futures all children deserve.
Each year, we invite our community to join us in planting pinwheel gardens across the New River Valley. By purchasing and displaying pinwheels, you’re helping to spread awareness and show your support for children and families in our region.
Together, we can make a difference—one pinwheel at a time.
Connect with NRV Cares today to learn more about our community education programs.
The pinwheel represents the great childhood that every child deserves, and the role we each play in providing a loving and supportive environment for the children in our lives.
Stewards of Children Trainings are offered free of charge.
