About the Program

Every parent needs help sometimes.

In partnership with a team of expert facilitators, our Parent Education program offers education, training, and support for parents and caregivers throughout the New River Valley. Whether you’re looking for helpful parenting strategies, struggling with a family transition like separation or divorce, or simply hoping to exchange ideas with other parents, the NRV CARES Parent Education program has a seminar that can help.

I have learned so much useful information and new techniques that will help me become a better mother to my son. I have learned how to regulate my emotions better than I did before, which has built a safer/healthier relationship with my child.

Parenting Tips

Connect during mealtimes

Mealtimes are a great opportunity for families to connect. While it can be hard with all the activities kids have going on, start by planning to sit down together once a week and go from there.

Ask for support

It takes a good parent to ask for support. Reach out to family, friends, or local resources, like NRV CARES for parenting support.

Model healthy behaviors

We are our kids’ first teachers, so it is up to us to model how to go through life. From communicating our needs, to doing tasks, to coping with emotions, it is on us to model for our kids the right way to navigate these life skills and when we mess up, because we will, – it is important for us to remember that we are human and apologizing to our kids, models for them taking responsibility for our actions.
