Programs

NRV CARES' programs support its mission to protect children from abuse and to strengthen families through education, advocacy and community partnerships. The future of the New River Valley, our Commonwealth, and our country depends on today’s children and their health and well-being.  We know that a child’s successful development does not just refer to his/her intellectual development but also includes emotional health coupled with a stable, loving living situation.  In today’s complex world, families experience many difficulties:  unemployment, divorce, the stress of everyday life.  However, children have a right to be free of chronic stress, a steady dose of which can affect a child’s ability to reach his/her full potential.  The Department of Health and Human Services suggests that communities view their approach to prevention  from three different angles:  primary prevention stops abuse before its occurrence; secondary prevention targets those at risk of abuse; and tertiary prevention reduces the long term effects of maltreatment through services to those who have experienced abuse.  NRV CARES has programs that address each of these target areas.
